It’s hard to write anything that sounds half-intelligent about Mumbai…words simply fall short of being able to capture what this mass of humanity on India’s west coast is like to the visitor.
It is difficult, too, to photograph Mumbai in a manner that presents a narrative. There is just so much there, yet at the same time, there are really very few ‘sights’ in the conventional tourist sense. The Victoria Train Station is perhaps the greatest landmark–a UNESCO site–yet photography inside is prohibited since the terrorist attack there two years ago.
The thing that makes Mumbai so unique after riding through Punjab, Rajasthan, and Gugarat is that the people are, well, unremarkable in appearance. They largely favor western attire, so people photography in Mumbai is not nearly as compelling as in other areas.
Still, there millions of people stacked on top of each other in one of the world’s most complex and diverse cities…surely there must be some gems in there to share
