For a glimpse into the past, be sure to visit Thunderbird Lodge when you are in the Lake Tahoe area. This historic site is the home built by eccentric multi-millionaire George Whittell in 1936. It remains an icon of the art deco era, consisting of the lodge itself, which was Whittell's "summer cottage," along with several other buildings. These other buildings include the "Card House" where high stake poker games were played and the "Elephant House," which was home to Whittell's pet elephant.
