Thunderbird Lodge: Old Lake Tahoe at its Most Intriguing
For a glimpse into the past, be sure to visit Thunderbird Lodge when you are in the Lake Tahoe area. This historic site is the home built by eccentric multi-millionaire George Whittell in 1936. It remains an icon of the art deco era, consisting of the lodge itself, which was Whittell’s “summer cottage,” along with several other buildings. These other buildings include the “Card House” where high stake poker games were played and the “Elephant House,” which was home to Whittell’s pet elephant.
Thunderbird Lodge gets its name from Whittell’s unique yacht, the Thunderbird. This magnificent 55 ft. speedboat can be seen at Thunderbird Lodge in the Boathouse designed for it. As you tour the grounds or use the facilities, you will notice the photography of Beata and Eric Jarvis on display.
The various locations at Thunderbird Lodge can be reserved for events, such as a one-of-a-kind wedding. A building often used for this very purpose is the beautiful Lighthouse, which was added in 1985. The lighthouse features a state of the art catering kitchen and room for 100 guests.
