I spent nearly a week off my bike traveling to Bangalore in a futile effort to get my camera and lens repaired. Unfortunately the saltwater killed both. Upon my return to Mangalore, Rick was done writing his latest installment on our journey and we were both ready to hit the road.
We decided to take the advice of one of the few bike tourists that we have met in India and headed to the mountainous country around Madikeri. Our first day out was a lot of rolling hills and some really poor roads. Even though I felt really strong, by the time we rolled into Sulya–the last big town before the big climbing up to Madikeri began–I was plenty hot and tired.
We found a third-floor room in the only hotel in town and I spent an hour out on the front balcony looking down on the fascinating street scene below. The variety of people, clothes, vehicles and activities was astounding. It was a fun way to get a feel for my new camera and capture a slice of the daily life of the workaday town of Sulya.
